.:: General Cemetery Index ::.
The General Cemetery which was opened in 1836 was one of the earliest commercial cemeteries in England and later went on to become Sheffield's main burial ground with over 87,000 interments. The current index is a work in progress and a list showing the number of burials which have been entered can be seen by selecting "What's Online" from the website submenu.

Some basic statistics have been provided showing a histogram of the age at death and also a table showing the most numerous surnames. The information contained in the index is currently as follows:

grave & burial number, date of death & burial, forename, surname, description, age, sex, cause & place of death, (parents), residence, parents, informant, officiating minister and denomination.

... although not all information is available for each burial.

The burials index can be searched by forename, surname, address and year of burial and where the grave number appears in blue on the search results screen then this can be clicked to bring up a list showing who else was buried in the same grave. It should be noted, however, that many graves were public rather than private graves and as such contained a potentially large number of people, none of whom are necessarily related. For example, the cemetery is known to have one of the deepest single grave plots in the country, holding the bodies of 96 people. The full burial record can be displayed by clicking the small magnifying glass icon.
